About
Welcome to The Mind Set! Our primary purpose is to empower people to feel confident in their decision making abilities by applying logic to life – a concept we like to refer to as "make your own algorithm". You've probably heard of "the algorithm", it's the secret sauce that keeps so many of us endlessly scrolling through our feeds. But what is an algorithm? At it's most basic an algorithm is a systematic method for taking an initial value (or set of circumstances) and applying a series of steps to transform that initial value into an intended outcome (or set of intended outcomes). If we apply this definition to "the algorithm" then the initial value represents the personal data that websites collect, the series of steps is mostly a combination of data analysis and applied psychology, and the desired outcome is that the website operators make money by keeping people on their site longer, increasing the chance that they'll click on an ad to buy something. We can even look at our behavioral patterns as personal algorithms that take us from one life experience to the next and how we can fine tune or adjust these patterns to help us reach our goals.
The Human Trichotomy
One of the key techniques to successfully applying logic to any situation is to first establish a clear context in which the analysis is taking place. Keeping questions in context and learning how to define that context are concepts we'll return to again and again. In particular, when applying logic to life we're going to try our best to consider ourselves as simultaneously physical, mental and spiritual beings as this will provide us with a solid foundation for our decision making. The idea of being simultaneously physical, mental and spiritual is what we at The Mind Set refer to as the human trichotomy. Let's look a little closer at each part before giving an example of how considering them tandem can help us make better decisions.
Physical
In addition to our bodies, the physical is also the hormones and neuromodulators that impact our physiological experiences. In order to sustain our physical structure we need food and water, clothing appropriate to our climate and some form of shelter. The raw materials that go into making clothing, building supplies and the variety of foods that we eat all come from the earth and they require a multitude of people and tooling to bring to bear. Because it is not possible to have a physical body without the existence of so many external factors it is necessary to consider those externalities in our physical development.
Mental
The mind can be seen as the interplay of two perceptually different sides, intellect and intuition. Our modern society tends to treat these as being in opposition to one another but we see them as similar to the two sides of a coin. We can perceive either one side or the other, however this perceptual limitation does not create two objects, there is only a single coin. In order to make confident decisions that ultimately lead us to a happier, more fulfilling life we believe it is necessary to have emotional and psychological tools to see many perspectives (intuition) and the know-how to navigate and interact with life's mechanics (intellect).
Spiritual
It is our belief that consciousness is an all pervasive phenomenon that is fundamental to the existence of the material world. Our desire to have purpose, to connect with something larger than ourselves is driven by this commonality we share with all things.
A Basis For Decision Making
Humans tend to think in a very linear, cause and effect manner and as a result we often frame our lives that way mentally. However, most of our everyday experience is non-linear in nature and when we apply our normal, linear thinking we often end up going in circles. It's these circular reasoning situations (among others) that can be broken out of by incorporating the human trichotomy model into our understanding of the circumstance.
